The education system changes started to happen early during the 18th century in the United Kingdom. The main reason for the revolution was in a way associated to the industrial revolution that happened in UK during the period. There were several restrictions that were laid on the entrepreneurs during the period and the main restrictions were on the apprenticeship. The industrialist began to resist the restrictions and there were several laws as per the Statute of Apprentices. The laws were applicable for the industries which were in trade after the year 1563; this made it difficult for the industries that were developed during the 18th century due to the industrial revolution.
Introduction of Charity Schools
As there was a need of education for the people there were several organizations who made their efforts to transform the education system by giving free education. In the 18th century, there were many charity schools founded and established for the poor students that were falling into the age group of 7 to 11. The schools were founded by the group known as society for promoting Christian knowledge.
The steps taken by the society was just a beginning for the education system but the concept is still followed today. The concept of primary education and the secondary education of modern education system is the same concept whose roots are well known in the teaching history in the UK laid back in 18th century.
Sunday School Movement
The education system for the poor boys of slums was introduced by Robert Raikes. The program was named as the Sunday school movement in which the boys who belong to the poor families from the slum areas were given education. Raikes took this movement as an initiative to stop the crime as educating people would make them think what they are doing before they actually perform the crime.
As the boys belong to the poor background, they are busy working in factories throughout week and the Sunday is the only day when they can spare the time to complete the necessary education. The movement was not so easy so Raikins tried to get the best available teachers for the program. The initial course was the Bible, initially the students were taught to read the bible and then they were asked to move on to the catechism.
Curriculum of the schools during the 18th century
As there were no separate laws of teaching instructions established, the schools used to decide their own teaching activities. The main focus was given towards the grammar part. The students were taught and proper instructions were provided for the education of grammar. The languages that were focused during the phase are Latin and Greek.
In the Raikins movement they were following a different schedule. The students used to come to the school at 10 in the morning; they used to go to their homes at 12. The students need to return back at 1 PM and then the lesson that was taught was to be conducted to the church.
